Jerk With
a Bomb are
just two guys from Vancouver calling themselves One Easy Skag and
The Silo...
One Easy Skag: "It's like an in joke. Something that nobody else is
supposed to get and isn't even really funny."
The Silo: "People only call me that if they're trying to mock me.
Only in reference to my pretentiousness."
...but
they don't use additional musicians. One Easy Skag plays guitar and
sings while The Silo divides his limbs between the drums and a keyboard.
One Easy Skag: "It started of as just an acoustic guitar and a snare
drum. There's been things added. No more members but a bit more limb
use on his part."
The Silo: "If we had more members who played the traditional instruments
it might not have had the same effect. I'm into the absence of all
the extra things. I don't want to play anything real fancy in this
band. The recordings won't feature things we can't play live."
One Easy Skag: "I'd like it to be kind of different but..."
The Silo: "It just seems like kind of a rip off when you get an album
and it's got all this stuff. Then you go and see the band and..."
One Easy Skag: "We just try not to include anything integral that's
not going to be there."
Their album is called Death to False Metal which is a little
misleading as most of it is best described as alt.country...
The Silo: "We're not real country in the old sense. A lot of it we
get second-hand through the Rolling Stones and stuff."
One Easy Skag: "The title was just another joke that seemed funny
at the time. It's funny because we've had a few reviews where people
were expecting metal..."
The Silo: "And were bitterly disappointed."
One Easy Skag: "We both like a certain amount of metal, though. I
have metal roots. Slayer and all that stuff in the '80s"
The Silo: "My metal phase was pretty lame. When I was 15 I liked lame
metal. There's been quite a resurgence in the indie rock scene of
classic metal."
One Easy Skag: "Kind of metal without the violence."
The Silo: "And without many of the solos."
...but they like lots of different types of music.
One Easy Skag: "There was a first tape too which was all over the
place. There was some metal on that."
The Silo: "There were covers on that. The Cure, Alice Cooper, Rudimentary
Peni, AC/DC..."
One Easy Skag: "We did a Pogues cover. They're probably an influence,
especially that one album Rum, Sodomy and the Lash."
The Silo: "I like a lot of new wave bands. The Cure, XTC, Elvis Costello,
Joy Division, Siouxsie and The Banshees... Contemporary jazz, new
music, whatever you want to call it... I can't really say if it finds
it's way into Jerk With a Bomb. It happens occasionally with solos".
They've toured all over North America, including a gig at NYC's
legendary CBGBs...
One Easy Skag: "We played to zero people at CBGBs. It's cool to just
be on the stage because there's a history there but it's such a dive
too."
The Silo: "It's not the cool place in New York anymore. Cool bands
don't play there."
...but they didn't play at New Music West.
One Easy Skag: "We didn't really want a part of that."
The Silo: "It's pretty cheesy. It's just a big industry fest where
a bunch of A&R people gather here and bands pay to get exposed. People
pay to register in the festival. We don't really want to get signed
by EMI."
One Easy Skag: "Plus those shows are quite expensive. We're not against
it but we'd rather play a show for five bucks."
The Silo: "It's all about getting signed to a major label. Why would
you want to do that when you have the option of exploring the independent
realm? There are really large independent labels that have really
great distribution and they treat their artists a lot better."
So don't expect their soon-to-be-completed second album to get
them heavy rotation on Much Music but do expect it to be damn good.
